Leslie K. Gardner
Leslie Gardner is an independent consultant with twenty years of optical industry marketing experience and over thirty years of business and marketing expertise from a variety of diverse industries. She was a founding partner of Aligned Growth Partners, a consulting group that focused on business strategy. At SOLA International, Inc. and SOLA Optical USA, Ms Gardner held the positions of Group Vice President for Strategic Marketing, Group Vice President for New Business Development, and Vice President of Marketing. During her tenure at SOLA, Ms Gardner was instrumental in more than tripling sales revenue, with double-digit growth that outpaced industry growth every year, and posted an excellent track record in identifying and creating new business opportunities, developing and launching new products, growing established businesses and building brand equity. She was an active member of both SOLA International and SOLA Optical USA executive committees accountable for new business and corporate strategic initiatives.
In addition to her optical industry experience, Ms Gardners marketing experience spans Fortune 500 to small cap companies in the consumer packaged goods, business-to-business, and technology arenas. She held marketing positions at Del Monte, Clairol and General Foods, and consulted to venture capital, advertising, public relations, and direct marketing firms, where among other activities, she developed business proposals and plans, strategic and marketing plans and industry analyses.
Ms Gardner graduated summa cum laude with a BS degree from SUNY Buffalo and earned and MBA with distinction from the Stern School of Business at NYU.
James M. Grootegoed
Mr. Grootegoed has 30+ years of varied and increasing responsibilities in the ophthalmic industry at both the manufacturing and wholesale levels.
Responsibilities have included: sales and marketing, new business planning, purchasing, business start-up, distribution and customer service, personnel/human resources, environmental compliance, computers/information resources, and telecommunications.
Mr. Grootegoed was formerly Executive Vice President of Walman Optical (the largest independent wholesale optical laboratory in the USA), a multiple-discipline $200+ million ophthalmic business. Mr. Grootegoed was a member of the Executive Committee, ESOP BOD, Finance Committee and Board of Directors (as Secretary 1995-2001). Mr. Grootegoed has also worked at the optical manufacturing level including Titmus Optical and Bausch & Lomb.
Mr. Grootegoed currently consults for The Magnum Group, Inc. and is the Technology Editor for a trade magazine targeted to wholesale manufacturing laboratories, Optical Lab Products.
Dr. John Hunkeler
Dr. Hunkeler is a nationally recognized leader in ophthalmology. He is the founder and medical director of Hunkeler Eye Institute, specializing in cataract and lens implant surgery. Dr. Hunkeler has maintained a private practice in Kansas City since 1973.
Dr. Hunkeler has helped educate ophthalmologists throughout the world in the technique of small incision cataract surgery. He was the first surgeon to use the YAG laser in Kansas City in 1984 and the excimer laser in 1988. In October 1996, he was recognized by Ophthalmology Times as one of the top 100 ophthalmologists in the United States.
In 1977, Dr. Hunkeler was the founding director of the Kansas City Eye Bank and served as its medical director for the next 10 years. As chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine from 1994 to 2000, Dr. Hunkeler oversaw the training of ophthalmology residents at the school.
Dr. Hunkeler earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas and continued his medical training with an internship at the Los Angeles County Hospital and subsequent ophthalmic residency at the University of Kansas. Dr. Hunkeler is a board-certified ophthalmologist and past president of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive surgery. Also, he has held leadership roles in many ophthalmic organizations and served on the boards of the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, the American Board of Eye Surgery, and the Eye Bank Association of America.
Page Johnson
Mr. Johnson is currently Senior Director for the Optical Village (Luxottica Retail), Cincinnati, Ohio. The site includes R&D for Luxottica, the Central Lab production facility, LCI operations, GOS operations, Equipment Center, Diagnostic Center, and corporate Supplies Business.
Mr. Johnson received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and his MBA in Finance, from Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Johnson established and managed LensCrafters frame fabrication facility in the USA in 1987 and moved it to Italy in 1999.
Dr. Richard L. Lindstrom
Dr Richard L Lindstrom, founder and attending surgeon of Minnesota Eye Consultants and Adjunct Professor Emeritus at the University Of Minnesota Department Of Ophthalmology, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and internationally recognized leader in corneal, cataract, refractive and laser surgery. He has been at the forefront of ophthalmology's evolutionary changes throughout his career, as a recognized researcher, teacher, inventor, writer, lecturer and highly acclaimed physician and surgeon.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Dr Lindstrom completed his doctorate degree in medicine in 1972. He conducted research, residency and fellowship training in cornea at the University of Minnesota and affiliated hospitals and extended his anterior segment surgery fellowship training at Mary Shiels Hospital in Dallas and was a Heed Fellow in Glaucoma at University Hospital in Salt Lake City. In 1980, Dr Lindstrom returned to the University of Minnesota, where he spent ten years on the faculty of the Department of Ophthalmology, the last two as a full professor and the Harold G. Scheie Research Chair. He continues as Adjunct Professor Emeritus, Chairman of the Vision Foundation, and Associate Director of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank at the University of Minnesota. He entered private practice in 1989, and has led the growth and expansion of Minnesota Eye Consultants serving as managing partner for 15 years.
He is medical director of Sightpath Medical which includes MSS and Laser Vision. He is also medical director of Refractec.
He is Chief Medical Editor of the USA and International editions of Ocular Surgery News, which reaches 82,000 Ophthalmologists worldwide.
Dr. Lindstrom is past President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. He serves on the Executive Committee and is the Chair of the Corporate gifts Committee for the ASCRS Foundation. He is also past President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the International Intraocular Implant Club, and the International Refractive Surgery Club. He is the Global Education Liaison of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He is Chairman and CEO of Lindstrom Restoration, a three-generation family business. He has endowed funds supporting the University of Minnesota, Department of Ophthalmology, the Eye Bank Association of America, and the University of Minnesota Tennis Team.
Dr Lindstrom holds over 30 patents in ophthalmology and has developed a number of solutions, intraocular lenses and instruments that are used in clinical practices globally. He serves on the Board of Directors of AcuFocus, Inc, TLC Vision, Occulogix, eyeonics, Refractec, the Minnesota Medical Foundation, and Inner City Tennis.
A frequent lecturer throughout the world on cornea, cataract and refractive surgery, he has presented over 37 named lectures and keynote speeches before professional societies in the U.S. and abroad, most recently giving the Blumenthal Memorial lecture in Jerusalem, Israel, the Benedetto Strampelli Medal Lecture in Rome, Italy, and the Albrecht von Garefe-Vorlesung Innovators Lecture in Nuremberg, Germany.
Dr Lindstrom serves on a number of Journal editorial boards, including JCRS, JRS, and Ophthalmic Surgery. He is the Honorary Editor-in-Chief of the U.S./Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology. He has co-edited seven books, published over 350 peer reviewed journal articles and 60 book chapters. His professional affiliations are extensive, including Liaison of the International Society of Refractive Surgery of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He is the recipient of numerous awards for distinguished service by national and international ophthalmology associations, including the LANS, Barraquer and the first lifetime achievement award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery in October 1995 and also was honoured with another lifetime achievement award in October 2002, the Binkhorst Lecture Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Bausch and Lomb Lifetime Achievement Award, April 2005, Benjamin F. Boyd Humanitarian Award in August 2000, and the Paton Award and NACT from the Eye Bank Association of America.
Robert Main
Mr. Main is President of the Professional Optical Concepts, a consulting firm specializing in the ophthalmic industry. Mr. Main has been in the optical industry for over 30 years.
Mr. Main began his optical career as a dispenser in his dads Optometric practice. During his career, Mr. Main has worked for Lenscrafters as a Director of Operations and was National Director of Technical Services for Eye Care Centers of America.
Mr. Main has been a CEO for a regionally dominate retail optical chain that also had refractive surgery centers and a managed care company. He has consulted for many independent optometric practices nationwide and has been a surgical assistant for a prominent Chicago Ophthalmologists.
Mr. Main has lectured internationally for many optical meetings, such as Vision Expo, SECO, MidWest Vision Congress, Canadian Opticians Association and numerous state associational meetings.
He has a Masters in Ophthalmic Optics and is a member of the National Academy Opticianry and the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives.
Mark Mattison-Shupnick
Mr. Mattison-Shupnick is a consultant to PixelOptics in the areas of product development, project management and ophthalmic optics. Currently, Mr. Shupnick is also Director, Education and Training for 20/20 Magazine and Jobson Medical Information LLC, the largest trade publisher in the ophthalmic industry.
Mr. Mattison-Shupnick lectures nationally and internationally. With over 40 years in the optical industry, Mr. Mattison-Shupnick brings diversity in experience to each new project. Prior to PixelOptics, Mr. Mark worked in a variety of roles for SOLA International as VP, Technical Marketing and VP New Products over a 22 year period. Prior to SOLA, Mr. Mattison-Shupnick developed and taught Ophthalmic Dispensing in the New York and California Community College systems.
Mr. Mattison-Shupnick holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Brooklyn College and is a Master Optician, as certified by the American Board of Opticianry, a member of the Opticianry Hall of Fame and recipient of the Beverly Myers Award for Education from the National Academy of Opticianry. Mr. Shupnick also serves as a Board member of People Restoring Vision and Improving Lives (PRVAIL), a foundation that supplies readers to missions in the US and to third world countries. Since its inception in 2003 almost 700,000 readers have been supplied at no charge to people with visual need.
John H. McDougall, OD.
Dr. McDougall did his undergraduate work in the Honors program at Michigan State University and graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1976. In 1981, he founded International Eyecare Center, Inc. in Quincy, Illinois.
Dr. McDougall is presently the CEO and President of IEC which currently operates seven optometric locations in Illinois and Missouri, as well as a LASIK center, an ophthalmology practice, and Ambulatory Surgical Center.
He also is currently developing cosmetic medicine centers in Florida. Dr. McDougall was President of eLaser Eye Centers, a national LASIK eye surgery management company.
He recently sold his fifty percent interest in a mobile aesthetic laser business operating in Florida and Washington D.C.
Dr. McDougall served on the Scientific Advisory Board for Innotech, a Johnson & Johnson Company. Dr. McDougall is an internationally recognized author and speaker.
Michael B. Packard
Michael B. Packard is currently President and C.E.O. of High Performance Optics, Inc. and HPO Ophthalmics, Inc.
Mr. Packard recently served as interim-Chief Executive Officer of Optical Dynamics Corporation in Louisville, Kentucky. In late 1999, Mr. Packard created his own firm, TransCat Consulting, helping organizations "make change that matters." Mr. Packard focuses on maintaining ongoing consulting relationships with several private sector companies and public school districts, concentrating on leadership development and strategic planning, but offering a wide range of organizational and functional experiences.
From 1989 - 1999, Mr. Packard's role as Executive VP and Chief Administrative Officer at LensCrafters was key to creating the most successful optical retailer in the world and one of the most successful overall U.S. retailers. In addition to his roles at LensCrafters (1987 - 1999) and Procter & Gamble (1971 - 1987), Mr. Packard was the key outside director on the Board of Innotech, Inc., a high-tech optical equipment company from 1992-97. His involvement included the "garage" R&D stage, a successful IPO, and ultimately the purchase of the Company byJohnson & Johnson.
He presently serves on the Boards of several high-tech product development companies. He also plays an active role and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Economics Center for Education and Research, part of the University of Cincinnati.
Mr. Packard has a Chemical Engineering Degree (Bucknell 1970) and an MBA (Virginia 1972) concentrating on organizational behavior and leadership. Continued education includes the Change Leadership Program (Wharton) and the Retail Executive Program (Harvard). Mr. Packard developed and facilitates unique workshops in areas such as Conflict Management, Writing to Get What You Want, Strategic Planning, Priority Setting and Action Execution, and Leadership Development.
